Onlay and crowns are similar in that they both require precise measurements and preparation on your tooth, and can be made from composite, porcelain or gold.

Crowns are often required for heavily discolored tooth or worn teeth where a full coverage protection is best suited.

Comparing to crowns, onlays are far less aggressive in its preparation, while still offering protection and cosmetic enhancement to a broken tooth. Onlay costs similarly to a crown, however onlay often requires more dentist skills in its design and planning.
